As Jeanne Jugan’s feast day was drawing near, our AJJ members were wondering what gift they could give to a saint. Putting their heads together they decided that the greatest gift would be to send her more young women to follow in her footsteps as Little Sisters. So for the month of August, they encouraged all of us – Residents, Sisters, AJJ, Staff, Volunteers, and anyone else who walked through the doors of our house, to offer up prayers and sacrifices for vocations to the Little Sisters of the Poor. To encourage us, they set the goal of offering enough prayers for miniature cut outs of Jeanne Jugan, each representing a prayer or sacrifice, to reach from our front door on the ground floor to our chapel on the 1st floor. By the front door, the entrance to the chapel and on each unit there was a basket with little papers to mark off the prayers and sacrifices offered. All responded with eagerness. By the 30th of August not only did they reach the door of the chapel but they even circled the walls around the entrance to the chapel. During the offertory of the Mass Jeanne’s feast day, some of the AJJ and Residents brought up basket of prayers and a tally sheet, along with a doll dressed as a Little Sister as a symbol of the offerings to God that month for the intention of vocations. The total number of prayers & sacrifices recorded was 950. May the Lord hear our prayers and send us young women who will become holy and faithful Little Sisters!
