Resident Interviews by
Lizeth Chamorro
As we prepared here at the Mullen Home in Denver for August 30th, the feast day of St. Jeanne Jugan, our Residents gathered eagerly in the living room each evening for a reading by Sr. Dara Catherine about our holy mother foundress. This reading was taken from the book Humble So As To Love More. Let’s listen to the Residents’ comments about this daily attraction:
“I love it because you learn a lot of things about Jeanne Jugan. She was a powerful little lady. Jeanne Jugan never complained about mud on her feet; she was always there for her poor. Sr. Dara’s reading is great, and there’s always ‘To be continued’. If it weren’t for St. Jeanne Jugan, we wouldn’t have a place to stay.”
– Anita Duran, 1st floor Resident
“I’m enjoying this story. It’s pretty good, and I hate to miss it! Jeanne Jugan loved God so much that she really believed in His providence.”
– Faye Gettler, 1st Floor Resident
“I was amazed about all the things that Jeanne Jugan went through in the beginning! Sr. Dara read the whole story…I’m happy to be here at the Mullen Home, and now I think I know Jeanne Jugan a little better.”
– Louise Kleiman, 2nd Floor Resident
“I’ve read the book already but there are things that I didn’t remember, and now they’ve been recalled to my mind. I was impressed by the way that Jeanne Jugan offered her own bed to the lady named Anne Chauvin.”
– Aurora Mora, 1st Floor Resident
“I’m not Catholic, but I love to learn the history of Jeanne Jugan and of the whole Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Sr. Dara’s style is especially soothing for our residents, and I look forward to hearing her every evening as I carry out my duties. I hope that Sister finds something else to read after that book is finished.”
– Katherine Standifer, RN, Staff Nurse
“I’m surprised at how Jeanne Jugan started the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor! It’s nice that somebody read the book to us–especially for those who cannot read very well because of poor eyesight. Sister reads very well, and I enjoy being there almost every night.”
– Eva Cernich, 2nd Floor Resident
“I haven’t seen or read that book before, and I like it. I also like Sr. Dara because she’s kind and understanding. I could have read the book myself, but it’s nicer to listen to Sister reading it.
– Kitty Sednek, 2nd Floor Resident
“One day Jeanne Jugan picked up an old woman, carried her on her shoulders, and then dedicated her whole life to the sick and the poor. I’m living in one of the Little Sisters of the Poor homes, and I think that these nuns are a reflection of Jeanne Jugan. I’m so happy to be here!”
– Angie Hoof, 1st Floor Resident
“Jeanne Jugan had a big heart, and so do the Little Sisters here in Denver!”
– Maria Lynn, 1st Floor Resident
